A Beef Cattle Producers Workshop was offered in February as a bi-county effort between the Santa Fe County Agent and the Torrance County Agent. The workshop information was presented with the assistance of extension livestock specialists, a county agent and the extension veterinarian. The topics of the workshop focused on animal health, marketing, bio-security, balancing input costs and dealing with locoweed toxicity. This workshop was attended by 38 producers from both counties with the each producer having different interests, especially the New Mexico Gold calf marketing program which one of the livestock specialists is working on.
The Agent with the support of Ag and Natural Resource Specialist continue to provide guidance to a sheep producer in Santa Fe County on the economics in developing his feeder lamb operation as well as his slaughter and processing facility. In addition assistance was provided to him in writing a grant proposal to USDA to secure funding for a hide tanning enterprise for the pelts that are harvested at the time of slaughter.
In the spring, guidance was also provided to the sheep producer on proper nutrition of lactating ewes to that insure that the ewes produced enough milk in order to minimize lamb death losses.

The Agent along with area Sheep specialist advised area rancher on a regular basis throughout the course of the year on proper sheep health nutrition management practices including parasite control practices. This particular sheep rancher is new to the industry and is trying to create a vertically integrated operation. The Agent and area Sheep Specialist also advise the rancher on purchases of sheep and lambs that are ecomonically lucrative.
Short-term
• Increased awareness of novel management practices and knowledge of current issues for more than 10% of New Mexico livestock producers through educational programs, direct communications, and popular press publications.
• Increased the number of producers using technology to evaluate production and financial aspects of cow-calf enterprises through participation in a Standardized performance analysis workshop.
• More than 90% of attendees surveyed at educational workshops perceive the monetary value of education gained exceeded the cost of attendance.
Medium term
• Improve decision-making skills of more than 500 livestock producers and county Extension agents through educational programs and seminars such that they are more confident in livestock management.
Long Term
• Improved knowledge level of county Extension agents regarding management of sheep and beef cattle through in-service trainings in the area of Range Nutrition and Management.
