A livestock showmanship clinic was conducted in June of 2006. The 4-H agent, a local agricultural science instructor, and a college student served as facilitators for the workshop. The clinic was open to all 4-H and FFA members in Quay County. The clinic covered showmanship and care techniques of sheep, goats, and swine. The goal of the clinic was to offer basic instructional guidance to youth who were involved in the livestock projects. Moreover, the aim was to enable youth to take the ideas home to practice so they could apply the techniques at the Quay County Fair. A total of 5 youth participated in the clinic, with 5 parent leaders present to learn with and assist the youth. Of the 5, 3 (60%)were showing animals for the first time. The basic materials which were covered were intended for those represented in this category. The other 2 participants received the same instruction, along with more advanced techniques, as well. Impacts of this clinic included ability to better feed, care for, and handle their livesock projects. Other impacts included statements made by participants. They said, "I really learned alot of useful information, and had fun applying your ideas to my project."(4-H Member, 2006). "It is nice to know that there are many people in the county who are willing to share their knowledge with the kids. We took ideas from every instructor, pondered them, and mixed them with what we already knew, to come up with something that worked for us." (4-H Parent, 2006). The turnout was low, but the outcomes of the clinic were tremendous. The clinic will be offered for years to come in Quay County.
