Range Worm Workshop
The agent along with an agent from a neighboring county presented a workshop on range worm control. The agents presented on how to identify the problem before the outbreak occurs, some recommendations on what methods of control to use, and how to calibrate a sprayer to use for control. Some other topics that were presented on were recommended chemicals for control and private pesticide applicator license that is required to purchase chemical for chemical control. There was only one producer that attended however, she was able to report back in August that she was able to prevent an outbreak on her ranch and that they had an 85% success rate of spraying the worms saving them roughly $8,000 in feed costs for this winter.

Range Worm Survey
The agent assisted in identifying a range worm outbreak in the southwestern part of the county. The agent contacted a neighboring agent to assist with the evaluation of the outbreak. The agent helped the producers flag the infestations over a ten mile radius and spray. As a result the producers were able to stop the windrowing of the range worms in two days. This resulted in a $10,000 savings of the grass that would have been affected if not treated in a timely manner. The agent and another agent have been working with another University on using glue traps to catch the larvae that are missed during the spraying. The results of this research will be available in 2011.

Pesticide Applicator CEU Class
Producers depend on applicators licenses for pesticides to buy products to control weeds, brush, or other problems on their properties. Producers must obtain educational credits in order to keep their licenses. Agent assisted in organizing private applicator training for region wide license holders. 35 producers attended the CEU class held on November 10, 2009 in Springer and 15 attended the CEU workshop held on November 10, 2009 held in Clayton that evening. Agent worked with the host agent and one other agent to contact producers or agency reps from over 6 counties. As a result 50 producers were able to maintain the minimum requirements to keep their license valid and three producers were allowed to test for a new license.

Forest, Fire, and Water Fair
There were a few range fires and forest fires in Colfax County throughout May and June of 2008. These fires were caused by lightening, downed power lines, and drought. The agent is working with a specialist to evaluate the need to re-organize the fair for 2010.
The agent has been working with elected officials, consulting firms, producers, emergency fire personnel, and government officals to develop a fire emergency plan for the village of Angel Fire. There have been twelve to sixteen members working on the plan during four separate meetings.
