University High School Sewing Classes
Eight clothing classes were conducted at Roswell’s alternative high school to teach high risk/low income students sewing basics. Through open labs and individual attention, the program assistant attended classes twice a week and worked with students to construct a tote bag/diaper bag and a crib quilt during the semester. The classes are ongoing, but at the reporting date, 12 class sewing sessions have been held. Eight students have completed their tote bags and 3 students have started the quilt project, with 37 total contacts for the semester.

Roundtable Career Program
The agent participated in Dexter High Schools’ Roundtable Career Program and gave the youth in grades 8 through 12 information on being an extension agent including educational requirements, job duties, starting salary, and benefit information. Approximately 60 youth attended the agent’s session to gain knowledge that will assist them with career choices.

4-H Novice Camp
The Chaves County Extension Office organized a 4-H Novice Day Camp for youth in the Chaves County 4-H Program. A total of 38 youth and adults attended the day-long program to gain information about 4-H projects and activities. The agriculture agent gave a presentation on “How to Give a Demonstration” and assisted with set-up and clean-up.

4-H County Contests
The agent assisted the 4-H agent and home economist with Chaves County 4-H Contests, which were held at the fairgrounds in Roswell. The agent set up the wildlife and horticulture contests and helped with tabulations, awards, dinner, and cleanup. A total of 46 youth participated in 12 contests areas during the day to gain knowledge in public speaking, leadership skills, and subject matter areas.

The agent served as superintendent of the Archery Contest and co-superintendent of the Wildlife Contest, which served 41 and 69 district participants, respectively. 4-H competition teaches the youth critical thinking, problem solving, and decision making to be a more successful, contributing member of society.
