Plan Goal

To provide continuing education credits to Childcare Providers while increasing knowledge level and professionalism.

Situation Statement

Childcare providers must reach a yearly goal of 6-24 continuing education hours in order for their centers to remain open and for employees to maintain their jobs. San Juan County offers very few opportunities for child care providers to receive these credits and in most cases the classes are expensive. Most child care providers find these hours to be inconvenient and repetitive. Using the Penn State Cooperative Extension Better Kid Care Child Care Provider Training curriculum we can offer on-site, affordable and positive training to child care providers that meet New Mexico regulation competencies. If we are successful, we will see an increased number of child care providers meeting the state requirements for continuing education credits.

Target Audience and Actions

The target audience will be child care providers in child care center settings. Continuing education credits will be earned through a series of one-hour trainings held on-site at the child care centers using the Penn State Better Kid Care Child Care Provider Training curriculum.

Short-Term Objectives

Participants will increase their knowledge in a variety of topics related to child care and will receive continuing education credits necessary to maintain their employment.

Medium-Term Objectives

Participants will be evaluated 6 weeks after initial training to determine if at least 60% of participants have kept their job due to earning continuing education credits.

Long-Term Objectives

Participants will be evaluated 6 months after initial training to determine if at least 40% of participants have kept their job due to earning continuing education credits.

Evaluation Plan

Pre and post knowledge evaluations will be used to determine level of knowledge gained and surveys will be used to determine the number of participants to maintained employment due to earning continuing education credits.
