Situation Statement
Child Care providers in McKinley County need assistance in acquiring continuing education credits in order to keep their home day care service incompliance with the state and federal program regulations and policies. Child care providers are classifies into three different groups: private household workers, who care for children in the providers home; care providers who care for children at the children’s home, and child workers who work at child care centers (Head Start, preschool, and other childhood programs).
Most child care providers generally take care of children from birth to age 12. We strive to provide high quality, informative, and educational workshops that support literacy for adult learners. To qualify for training hours a workshop needs to meet one of the seven competencies; supervision/professionalism, child growth/development and learning, health/safety and Nutrition, developmentally appropriate content, family and community collaboration, learning environment and curriculum implementation, and stress management. We provide training for several agencies including: The Navajo Nation Child Care & Development Fund Program, Connections, PAT (Parents as Teachers), and Project SUCCESS on a yearly basis.
Target Audience and Actions
The target audience is composed of child care providers in McKinley County in Gallup and rural areas that are registered at one of three agencies Navajo Nation Child Care & Development Fund Program, Connectins, PAT (Parents as Teachers) and Project SUCCESS. Training is provided for men and women at the request of their supervisors. Sessions very from one to three hours depending on the subject on a monthly basis. Participants view New Staff Orientation on one of the following sessions each training: Supervision, Child Development, Health and Safety, and Professionalism.
Short-Term Objectives
80% of the participant will increase their knowledge on a variety of subjects which meet child care licensing regulation competencies, such as child development, health and safety and professionalism.
80% of the participants will acquire necessary continuing education hours to keep their employment as child care providers.
Medium-Term Objectives
Six weeks after attending workshops, 40% of providers will be using techniques learned, with children in their care.
Six weeks after attending workshops, 40% of providers will have kept their jobs as a result of earning continuing education credits.
Long-Term Objectives
Pre/Post knowledge tests will be used to determine level of knowledge gained or lost from workshops.
Providers will use 40% of techniques learned during workshops with their children to provide a quality daycare atmosphere.
Evaluation Plan
Pre/post knowledge tests well be used to determine level of knowledge gained or lost from workshops.
The number of providers who keep their jobs as a result of earning continuing education credits and the number of hours of continuing education credits earned will be documented from surface mail surveys.
