Plan Goal
Strengthen the educational pipeline and increase economic opportunities for farmers and ranchers while providing county extension agents with the appropriate information needed to leverage community development opportunities with new and existing partners
Situation Statement
Entrepreneurship is truly at the heart of New Mexico's economic base. According to the Small Business
Administration:
Small businesses make up 96.2 percent of all New Mexico employers. There are 153,800 small businesses in New Mexico. Home‐based businesses account for 53 percent of all small businesses. There are approximately 40,600 minority‐owned businesses and 42,252 women owned. Businesses in New Mexico and almost all of them are small businesses. The latest figures show that small business creates 65 percent or more of America's net new jobs.
Target Audience and Actions
The target audience will consist of farmes and ranchers in the 11 Northern Counties.
The activities that support this goal are two-fold: (1) marketing and outreach, to inform farmers and ranchers of support that is available to grow their agricultural operations and (2) development of self-assessment tools that will help evaluate the needs of these entrepreneurs.
Specific activities scheduled that support this goal are:
▪ develop new marketing materials for promoting CES, including informational materials about USDA programs
▪ proactively market the resources in the target communities,
Short-Term Objectives
Increase community knowledge of NMSU’s CES and the opportunities that are available to farmers and ranchers by partner organizations such as USDA.
Identify community leaders and who could assist NMSU’s CES agents and specialists by providing meaningful opportunities for economic and community development to agricultural producers within their respected communities.
Medium-Term Objectives
Increase community involvement with NMSU’s CES agents and specialists and the opportunities that are provided by complementing organizations such as the USDA.
Expand leadership capacity by providing community leaders with up to date information on educational and professional development opportunities.
Long-Term Objectives
Create a seameless network between CES agents, specialists and community leaders by which agricultural producers can access services and educational opportunites.
Evaluation Plan
All partipants of educational workshops and who attend conferences will be evaluated based on the content of the program provided.
