Plan Goal

The goal of the Jicarilla Extension Project in regards to Livestock production is to provide Jicarilla Producers with opportunities to learn about Heard Health, Best Management Practices and Rangeland Conservation.

Situation Statement

Jicarilla producers are at various levels of management of their livestock operations. Most rely on the local sales barn (auction) for the sale of their calves. Primary production on the Jicarilla is cow calf, with very few sheep or yearling cattle. Vast amounts of rangeland are available for cattle grazing. Jicarilla livestock producers hold grazing permits and are on an allotment system with several family members sharing an individual grazing allotment.

Short-Term Objectives

1. Increased knowledge by producers in general livestock production.
2. Increase in producer knowledge relating to vaccines; their use, cost and correct application.
3. To increase livestock producer knowledge in marketing options.

Medium-Term Objectives

1. Increase in record keeping by livestock producers.

Long-Term Objectives

1. To enable Jicarilla producers through education to maximize profit on their operations while preserving rangelands on the Jicarilla Nation.

2. To enable Jicarilla Producers through education to develop a respected and valued livestock market.

Evaluation Plan

Evaluations of presentations will take place after 50-75% of presentations. Interviews with individuals will also be taken to evaluate programing impacts.
