Plan Goal

Increase, enhance, and sustain New Mexico urban and rural lifestyles by teaching proper landscape plant selection, management, and efficient water use.

Situation Statement

A high number of Chaves County residents are urban. Most urban residents are increasingly interested in home gardening and landscape gardening, but have little knowledge of research-based information in these areas. There is an increased demand for information in planting trees and other landscape gardening, safe and efficient home vegetable gardening, reducing water use, and being environmentally safe in gardening activities. Up to four times as much herbicides and other pesticides per acre are used in urban situations than in farming areas. County residents are in need of scientific-based research in all of these topics.

Target Audience and Actions

The entire population of Chaves County is the target audience.

Short-Term Objectives

1. Teach Master Gardener classes to better Chaves County residents in their gardening skills.

2. Utilize the Master Gardener Program graduates to assist the Chaves County Extension Office in disseminating research-based knowledge and skills to other Chaves County residents.

3. County residents will obtain research-based information in the areas of home gardening, landscape gardening, and urban environmental protection. Publications and resource materials will be distributed to the public.

Evaluation Plan

Verbal and written responses from clientele concerning knowledge gained and the effectiveness of the knowledge gained can be used to evaluate the success of the program. Written evaluations utilized during organized programs, clinics, and displays will also be used to measure knowledge gained. Methodologies used by county residents can be compared over the years to determine if attitudes have changed and effective cultural practices are being utilized.
