Plan Goal

To promote positive youth development for Curry County youth through 4-H project work, special interest, school enrichment, competition, workshops, record books, camps, county council, officer trainings, junior/teen leaders

Situation Statement

The New Mexico 4-H Youth Development Program is committed to delivering research based educational curriculum and related learning experiences for youth in club, school enrichment, and special interest. The Curry County 4-H Program strives to ensure that every youth involved will have the opportunity to participate in 4-H experiences that strengthen a young person’s sense of belonging, generosity, independence and mastery. Over 33% of Curry County’s population is under age 19 (2002 U.S. Bureau of the Census). Through projects and activities in 4-H, youth have many opportunities to develop life and leadership skills that include responsibility, self-confidence, self-esteem, communication skills, teamwork and decision making.

Target Audience and Actions

Curry County youth ages 5 to 19 are targeted to learn life, leadership and citizenship skills through: Project Work, Special Interest Groups, School Enrichment, Competitive Events, Fairs, Workshops, Record Books, Camps, Community Service, Public Speaking, Elected/Appointed Offices, etc.

Short-Term Objectives

The majority of youth involved in the Curry Co. 4-H program will learn subject matter concepts through hands-on experiences such as camps, clinics, workshops, etc., developing life skills through project work, competitive events, real-life situations and career exploration opportunities.

4-H members will gain public speaking skills, strengthening communication and organization abilities and self-concept, through speaking at club, school enrichment, special interest and county 4-H events developing cognitive skills, teamwork, leadership and citizenship potential.

4-H members will gain leadership and teamwork skills through leadership opportunities at the club, county and state levels and demonstrate effective leadership and teamwork skills to local community members, organizations and projects

Medium-Term Objectives

4-H members with 2 to 3 years experience will learn subject matter concepts through hands-on experiences such as camps, clinics, workshops, etc., developing life skills through project work, competitive events, real-life situations and career exploration opportunities.

4-H members with 2 to 3 years experience will gain public speaking skills, strengthening communication and organization abilities and self-concept, through speaking at club, school enrichment, special interest and county 4-H events developing cognitive skills, teamwork, leadership and citizenship potential.

4-H members with 2 to 3 years experience will gain leadership and teamwork skills through leadership opportunities at the club, county and state levels and demonstrate effective leadership and teamwork skills to local community members, organizations and projects.

Long-Term Objectives

4-H members with at least 4 years experience will learn subject matter concepts through hands-on experiences such as camps, clinics, workshops, etc., developing life skills through project work, competitive events, real-life situations and career exploration opportunities.

Evaluation Plan

Evaluations will be conducted through surveys conducted for a portion of workshops and major events. Surveys will be designed to measure effectiveness of program, life & leadership skills learned and self-concept of youth participants.

Annual 4-H Enrollment will show the number of youth that enroll in various projects.
Participation in District, State and National events will show increase.
Participation in County activities and leadership roles assumed.
Review of yearly record books which are completed by youth will show skills learned.
