Plan Goal

Improve the sustainability and production potential of agronomic crops and improved pastures in order to improve the soil tilth, yield capability, crop or forage quality as well as the economic and environmental benefits to the land users in Valencia Coun

Situation Statement

Valencia County produces a substantial quantity of hay in New Mexico's agriculture, with over eighty percent of the county's hay production in alfalfa. The program area will focus on improving sustainable practices and production yeilds through workshops, one-on-one consultations and publications. With the growing population, strain on water supplies, and the public attention on farming practices, producers must continue to evolve through the incorporation of new and emerging methods. Through continuing educational efforts and assistance from the state specialist, agriculturists in the area will be able to continue and enhance their production operations.

Target Audience and Actions

The target audience is as diverse as the population of Valencia County, from the small scale farmer to the largest of the county's operations. As well as alerting the general public to the efforts of agriculturists in the area to protect the integrity of farming and the Rio Grande. Educational activities will be conducted through demonstration plots, workshops, and Pesticide Certification Workshops.

Short-Term Objectives

Increase the awareness of best management practices through educational programs, direct communications, and demonstration plots. Increase number of producers using new and emerging technology by 10 to evaluate production and profitability.

Medium-Term Objectives

Improve the decision making skills of 20 crop producers through educational efforts and seminars.

Long-Term Objectives

Improve profitiability and sustainability of crop production operations by lowering production costs and increasing gross revenue.

Evaluation Plan

Workshop/seminar evaluations through survey to track understanding of concepts presented. Individual observation of changes in overall management practices.
