Plan Goal

Improve urban horticulture knowledge and develop responsible landscape and gardening practices for residents in Valencia County.

Situation Statement

Valencia County is a rapidly developing area of the state. With an influx of new residents to the area the importance of informing individuals of horticultural practices that are practical and essential to the region. This information is also vital to established residents in order to develop their horticulture knowledge and encourage responsible gardening/landscaping practices.
The information will guide residents in appropriate plant selection, water usage, and weed control, and will help to alieviate frustrations over how to appropriately plant and grow in the unique environment and challenges the region faces.

Target Audience and Actions

The primary audience will consist of the private land/home owner. These individuals will reached through Master Gardener training classes and community programs. Individuals will also be served through one-on-one consultations and publications. In addition to the general public, information will also be directed to commercial growers, landscape professionals, and suppliers through workshops, conferences, and personal interactions.

Short-Term Objectives

Train and retrain 25 Master Gardeners, as well as provide classes in basic horticulture, demonstration gardens, and horticulture workshops to increase awareness and adopt regionally appropriate practices in horticulture.

Medium-Term Objectives

That city planners, homeowners, and decision makers adopt practices that help preserve and enhance Valencia County.

Long-Term Objectives

To continue to aesthetically enhance Valencia County through horticulture while preserving a sustainable water supply that is required for growth and life in Valencia County.

Evaluation Plan

Evaluation consist of subject tests administered to Master Gardening training classes. Surveys will be utilized to gauge success of workshops and demonstrations. And finally, Master Gardener hours donated will be recorded.
