Good Nutriton is essential to maintain good health. With San Miguel being one of the poorest counties and one with many limited resourses, low employment and large numbers in families it becomes difficult to get the proper nutrition. With a high rate of

Situation Statement

Teaching good basic nutrition to young families will decrease the complicated illness attributed to poor nutrition, and lack of knowledge the relationships between health and four specific areas: basic nutrition, food safety, food preparation, and food resource management. In addition, many limited-resource individuals do not receive the encouragement and reinforcement needed to put such knowledge into practice. With continued nutrition Education via ICAN?EFNEP classes low income families and individuals can maximize their resources to improve their nutritional status. Youth as well as adults should be targeted so nutrition related disease and obesity can be prevented. With the population of San Miguel county being 80% Hispanic to 18% White and 2% other makes San Miguel county one of the most viable areas for nutriton programs.

Target Audience and Actions

Targeted audiences will be composed of low income limited resourse familes from San Miguel County, including all ISD Clientele from three counties (Mora, San Miguel, Harding).
WIC Clientele from those same counties will be addressed with EFNEP Classes. The Public School, Head Start DVR programs, Day Care Providers and other type agencies will receive Extension researched based information as required.

Short-Term Objectives

80% of San Miguel County participants will increase knowledge of My Pyramid, Dietary Guidelines and Nutrition Facts Labels.
80% of participants will increase knowledge of healthy food choices.
80% of participants will increase knowledge of food preparation and meal planning.
80% of San Miguel County participants will increase knowledge of food resource management.
80% of participants will increase knowledge of the importance of physical activity
60% of participants will plan to use MyPyramid, Dietary Guidelines and Nutrition Facts Labels to make food choices and plan meals. 60% of participants will plan to increase fruit and vegetable consumption.
60% of participants will plan to control portion sizes.
60% of participants will plan to adopt new food preparation and meal planning techniques.
60% of participants will plan to adopt new food resource management techniques.

Medium-Term Objectives

40% of San Miguiel County participants will use MyPyramid, Dietary Guidelines and Nutrition Facts Labels to make food choices.
40% of participants will increase fruit and vegetable consumption
40% of participants will control portion sizes one month. 40% of San Miguel County participants will adopt new food preparation and meal planning techniques.
40% of participants will adopt new food resource management techniques.

Long-Term Objectives

30% of San Miguel County participants will sustain adopted practices 3 years after program completion.
30% of participants will decrease their rates of chronic disease (obesity, cancer, heart disease).

Evaluation Plan

Participant from both ICAN/EFNEP will retain Nutrition knowledge. Behavior surveys, diet food recall records and activity logs will measure short and medium term objectives.
