Situation Statement

The 2000 U.S. census shows that Santa Fe County has more than 5,000 children under the age of 6 who live in households with two working parents or with a single parent who is employed requiring parents to make child care provisions for their children.

According to the Children, Youth & Families Department, Santa Fe County has 10 licensed group homes, 10 licensed homes, 54 licensed centers and 65 registered homes.

Finding high quality and affordable child care has become a barrier for many Santa Fe County families. The cost of child care in Santa Fe starts at about $100 a week.

Licensed facilites must comply with federal and state guidelines and child care staff must complete the required continuing education credits annually.
