Plan Goal

Improve the sustainability and production potential of agronomic crops and improved pastures in order to improve the soil tilth, yield capability, crop or forage quality as well as the economic and environmental benefits to the land users.

Situation Statement

San Juan County has 144,510 acres of irrigated crop land on 641 farms with total gross receipts of 43,633,000 per year. Alfalfa is the largest crop acreage in the county followed by corn, wheat, oats, irrigated pasture and vegetable crops. Profitability from these important crops can be increased through the
Adoption of good production and management practices which enhance both yield and quantity. It is important that producers use sound environmentally safe production techniques to insure a safe food supply.

Target Audience and Actions

The target audience will be composed of over 250 crop producers in San Juan County. In order to service the educational needs of producers, county educational activities will be conducted through Demonstration plots, Four Corners Weed Symposium, Four Corners Alfalfa and Irrigated pasture Workshop, Pesticide Certification Workshop, and Shiprock Ag. Days. In addition eight(8) newsletters will be mailed to over 700 crop and land managers.

Short-Term Objectives

Increase awareness of Best management pratices through educational programs, direct communications and demonstration plots. Increase the number of producers using technology by 15 to evaluate production and profitability.

Medium-Term Objectives

Improve decision-making skills of 60 crop producers through educational programs and seminars.

Long-Term Objectives

Improve profitability and sustainability of crop production enterprises by lowering production costs and increasing gross revenue.
