Youth development research emphasizes the importance of meeting the four basic human needs of belonging, generosity, independence and mastery. The Valencia County 4-H Youth Development Program strives to ensure that every youth involved will have the opportunity to participate in 4-H experiences that strengthen a young person’s sense of belonging, generosity, independence and mastery. Through projects and activities in 4-H, youth have many opportunities to develop life and leadership skills that include responsibility, self-confidence, self-esteem, communication skills, teamwork and decision making. These skills are introduced, developed and expanded throughout a lifetime.
During the 4-H program year, youth involved in 4-H programming will learn subject matter and develop life skills through hands-on experiences via project work, competitive events, real-life situations, and career exploration opportunities. Youth will also gain public speaking skills, strengthening communication and organization abilities and self-concept, through speaking at club, school enrichment and special interest events. Finally, youth in the 4-H club program will gain leadership and teamwork skills through leadership opportunities at the club, county and state levels and demonstrate effective leadership and teamwork skills to local community members, organizations and projects, and provide primary leadership to countywide events.

Enrollment:
This year in Valencia County, there was 76 new 4-H members, 159 returning regular members and 44 Cloverbud 4-H members enrolled in the program, resulting in a total enrollment of 279 youth. There was also a total of 89 enrolled adult Volunteer leaders to assist in programming. The Agent is responsible for overseeing the entire program and its membership.

Newsletter & Communication Efforts:
Newsletter: The Agent prepares a monthly newsletter that is sent electronically to approximately 300 4-H Members, Leaders and Supporters in Valencia County. By sending the newsletter electronically, the Agent was able to send the newsletter monthly instead of bi-monthly. The newsletter is the most effective way of communicating information to 4-H’ers and highlights 4-H’ers and their accomplishments as well as upcoming news and events for 4-H members, Leaders and Supporters to get involved in. Increased awareness about upcoming County, District and State events through the newsletter is indirectly evident by the participation from 4-H’ers in these events.

E-Newsletter: The Agent contributes articles and information about the 4-H program to the bi-monthly Valencia County e-Newsletter. The agent uses this avenue to inform and recruit potential new 4-H’ers and Volunteers to the program. This newsletter is distributed to a minimum of 250 Valencia County residents.

Website: A county website is kept up to promote and provide information for the Valencia County 4-H program. The website provides information to 4-H members and their families on events and deadlines as well as information to potential 4-H members on enrolling in the program. The Agent works with CES Staff to provide information for and maintain the website.

Facebook: The Agent created a Valencia County 4-H Facebook page to communicate news and information to 4-H families, Volunteers and Supporters. Keeping current with media trends and outlets is important in reaching today’s clientele. The Agent regularly posts information and announcements about the 4-H program on the Facebook page and encourages Volunteers, youth and Leaders to share information as well.

Open House:
An annual Open House/Ice Cream Social was used to promote the County 4-H Program, Clubs and Projects. Again, this year the Ice Cream Social was used to attract attendance to the Open House. 4-H’ers were present to answer questions about the 4-H program to potential 4-H’ers. 19 4-H’ers and Volunteers attended this event and approximately 22 new youth were recruited to join the 4-H program.

Competitions:
In order to prepare for 4-H competitions, the Agent works with CES Staff and Volunteer Leaders to plan and conduct practices and workshops which enhance the 4-H’ers knowledge of the contest areas and prepare them for the contests themselves. These practices and workshops are designed for the 4-H’ers to learn not only the subject materials, but to learn friendly competition and decision making life skills. While not all of the practices and workshops are highly attended, those 4-H’ers who do attend express their increase in knowledge after attending. The youth who participate in these practices and workshops demonstrate the increase in their knowledge through their participation and placing in the competitions.

National Contests: Eight 4-H’ers traveled to Denver, Colorado to compete at the Western National Roundup in the Home Ec. Skill-A-Thon and Horse Bowl contests. The Home Ec. Skill-A-Thon team placed 2nd High with one member of the team placing 4th High Individual. The Agent was responsible for helping the 4-H’ers secure funding for their trip as well as coordinating practices with other CES Staff and Volunteers to help the youth prepare for their competitions.

County Contest: This year, 75 4-H’ers enrolled and participated in Valencia County Contests. Decision making and public speaking/communication skills are among the many life skills 4-H’ers develop while participating in these competitive events. These contest help prepare 4-H’ers for future competitions where they compete as teams. County Contest is used as a qualifier for District and State Contests. The Agent works with Volunteer Leaders, judges and CES staff to help 4-H’ers prepare for these contest with the goal of building the 4-H’ers self-esteem and self-confidence through positive constructive criticism and advice for future competition. Currently 27% of 4-H’ers enrolled in the county participate in County Contests.

District Contest: This year, 24 4-H’ers participated in the Northwest Districts 4-H Contests in Estancia, NM. Building on the decision making and public speaking/communication skills 4-H’ers developed while participating in County Contest, 4-H’ers developed essential team work skills while preparing for and participating in these contests. The Agent works with other CES Staff and Volunteers to help prepare 4-H’ers for their competitions. The Agent is also responsible for promoting, coordinating youth registrations for the event as well as organizing three of the contests during District Contest. Approximately 8% of 4-H’ers enrolled in the county participated in District Contests.

State 4-H Conference: This year, 9 4-H’ers participated in State 4-H Conference held in Las Cruces, NM. Through contests, workshops and meetings this week long event allows 4-H’ers to increase the development of their team work, public speaking, leadership and decision making life skills. The Agent works with other CES Staff and Volunteers to help prepare 4-H’ers for their competitions. The Agent is also responsible for promoting, coordinating youth and adult registrations and helping find chaperones for the event. An understanding for 4-H subject matter is evident through the Hippology, Home Ec. Skill-A-Thon and Home Ec. Bowl teams all taking top honors in their respected competitions. These three teams have earned the right to compete at the national level in January 2012. Two 4-H’ers who attended this event returned with goals of running for a State 4-H Leadership Team position. 3% of 4-H’ers enrolled in the county participated in State 4-H Conference.

Record Books:
One record book training and five Club visits were held to give an overview of the record book guidelines and to emphasize the importance of record keeping and how it will help 4-H’ers in future endeavors like college and career application. 4-H’ers received information on what should be included in record keeping and how to complete a record book. Along with record keeping, the Agent teaches 4-H’ers the difference between achievement, citizenship and leadership and how these apply to 4-H project work. Ten 4-H’ers and one Cloverbud completed record books this past year.

Horse Activities:
State 4-H Horse School: 12 (28% of youth enrolled in a Horse Project) 4-H’ers from Valencia County applied to attend State 4-H Horse School. The Agent is responsible for promoting, coordinating registration and finding chaperons for the event. 4-H’ers who attended received hands-on training on their horse and horsemanship through riding sessions as well as workshops on both animal and youth care and health issues. The 4-H’ers who participated in this weeklong event were able to use the knowledge gained while participating in District and State Horse Shows as well as with our local 4-H Horse Council.

Livestock Activities:
State 4-H Livestock School: Six (5% of youth enrolled in a livestock project) 4-H’ers from Valencia County attend this year’s State 4-H Livestock School. The Agent is responsible for promoting, coordinating registration and finding chaperons for the event. 4-H’ers who attended received hands-on training on how to care for their 4-H livestock animals as well as feeding, veterinary needs, nutrition, selection, and showmanship. 4-H’ers who attended this event were able to take the knowledge gained from the school and help other 4-H’ers with their livestock projects in preparation for the County Expo. Improvement in showmanship by youth who attended livestock school was evident during the Showmanship Awards at the 2011 Valencia County Community Expo. Three of the 4-H’ers who attended Livestock School are regularly called upon by the Agent to help less experienced 4-H’ers with their Livestock Projects. The youth have expressed how helping younger 4-H’ers has improved their showmanship skills.

Two “Prepare for Fair” livestock project workshops were presented to 4-H youth enrolled in livestock projects. These workshops provided youth with information on livestock selection, nutrition and feeding, veterinary care, showmanship, and preparing for the various fairs the youth can participate in. For these workshops, the Agent utilized specialists from NMSU to teach selection, nutrition, veterinary care and showmanship. The 4-H Home Economist presented information on marketing their Livestock Projects to potential buyers. The Agent presented information on Livestock Bio-Security and how to prevent the spread of disease. Twenty-three youth participated in one of the two workshops presented. A pre-test showed that the majority of youth attending knew little about how to keep from spreading livestock diseases and other Bio-Security issues. The post-test results showed a 95% increase in knowledge of Bio-Security issues including how to prevent the spread of livestock diseases. 80% of youth surveyed felt that the information gained was very beneficial in helping them prepare for fairs this year and in the future. Some of the comments on the surveys indicated that 4-H’ers learned the “importance of routine” when feeding their animals, and how to “select animals without disease.”

The Agent offered several “Weigh Days” for 4-H’ers with Livestock Projects. Home visits were conducted throughout the summer. The Agent helped 4-H’ers weigh their Livestock Projects and offered advice on feed adjustments, exercise routines and grooming. On average, the Agent would visit 10 homes on weigh days. 4-H’ers expressed their appreciation of having livestock scales available to their family as well as advice on how to improve their projects. The Agent enjoyed the visits with these families and seeing the improvements of not only the livestock but the enthusiasm of the 4-H’ers.

Project Activities:
The Agent hosted four Project Day Camps for 4-H’ers to complete indoor projects to be entered in the Valencia County Community Expo. The Agent provided materials and guidance for 4-H’ers wishing to complete their Scrapbooking, Arts & Crafts, Housing & Interior Design, Welcome to NM 4-H, and Leathercraft Projects. The Agent also provided materials and guidance for 4-H’ers with Livestock and other Animals Projects to create posters about their projects. Fourteen 4-H’ers took advantage of the Project Day Camps.

Fair Activities:
Tagging Days: Three tag days were coordinated and set up by the Agent and the New Mexico Livestock Board. These dates were coordinated for the 4-H and FFA youth of Valencia County. One steer tagging date was set in April and two tag dates were set in May for pigs, goats, lambs and dairy heifers. The Agent was responsible for coordinating dates and locations with the 4-H and FFA members showing livestock.

Valencia County Community Expo: The 3rd Annual Valencia County Community Expo (VCCE) was held in Los Lunas, NM. This event was the venue for 4-H’ers to showcase their 4-H Indoor and Livestock Projects. Twenty-seven 4-H’ers (10% enrolled) exhibited 148 indoor projects at the Expo. An additional 45 4-H’ers (16% of 4-H’ers enrolled in livestock projects) exhibited their livestock projects at the Expo.

Fall Farm Festival:
The 5th Annual Fall Farm Festival is sponsored by the Valencia County 4-H Program, CES staff and Staff from the NMSU Agriculture Science Center, to promote the agriculture industry. The Agent works with CES Staff to coordinate 4-H Club booths and Agricultural demonstrations. With a pumpkin patch, corn maze, and several agricultural demonstrations, visitors to this event learn about agriculture and the 4-H program. Individual 4-H clubs put on game and activity booths, to promote their clubs, while booths and materials from the Southwest Mobile Dairy, Farm & Livestock Bureau, New Mexico Beef Council, Master Gardeners, New Mexico Game and Fish and Costanza Orchards to promote agriculture. Approximately 800 people attended the event. A total of $3,264 was raised for the 4-H program.

Shooting Sports
Twelve Valencia County 4-H’ers (15% of Senior youth enrolled in shooting projects) participated in the State 4-H Shooting Sports contest in Raton, NM. The Agent is responsible for coordinating with other CES Staff and Volunteer Coaches to prepare 4-H’ers for this competition, as well as coordinate youth registrations for the event. By participating in the different shooting competitions, 4-H’ers further developed their teamwork self-confidence and self-discipline life skills. This event is used as a qualifier for the National Shooting Sports Contest. The Air Rifle Team and .22 Rifle Teams both took top honors with several 4-H’ers brining home top honors as Individuals. The Air Rifle Team went on to compete at the National 4-H Shooting Sports Contest in San Antonio, TX. One 4-H’er received top honors in two of his shooting events and placed as the 2nd High Individual overall in Air Rifle.

o State – State 4-H Conference is conducted in July on campus at New Mexico State University for Senior age 4-H members qualifying at the County Level. Staff from the College of Ag & Home Economics serve as superintendents to conduct quality educational experiences for youth related to several subjects. Youth also participate in hands-on workshops and tours.
o National – Senior age 4-H members winning selected contests at the State Level are eligible to participate in National and Regional Contests.
339 senior age youth representing 30 counties participated in subject matter related contests (Ag & Natural Resources, Home Economics, and General) and hands-on workshops, increasing knowledge and life skills through education.

Objective #17: 50% of youth with at least 4 years of experience in 4-H will gain public speaking skills, strengthening communication and organization abilities and self-concept, through speaking at club, school enrichment and special interest events.

New Mexico 4-H collected $3,000 to provide improvements to facilities and send children to camp.

o 5,800 youth are contributing members of society through their service learning and citizenship projects. Members average three hours of service per year for a total of over 17,400 hours of community service.

Accomplishments:
• Extension Personnel organize and implement County and Multi-County Camps for 4-H Youth around the State. Camp sites include the Datil Well; County Fairgrounds; White Sands Missile Range and Ghost Ranch. Youth gained life skills related to: citizenship; social skills; healthy life style choices; teamwork; communication; leadership; and recreation. Senior 4-H members served as counselors. 11,693 youth participated in overnight and day camps, increasing knowledge and skills related to subject matter, leadership, and basic life skills.

• Fairs and Achievement Days
o Achievement Days – Counties with Fairs falling after the State Fair may hold Achievement Days to qualify exhibits for state level competition. 5 counties hold Achievement Days annually to showcase life skills gained by 4-Hers throughout the year.
o County Fairs – 33 counties participate in County or Bi-County Fairs with an indoor exhibit component and livestock shows. Indoor exhibits, livestock shows, horse shows and dog shows allow youth to showcase life skills gained throughout the year. Youth receive recognition through ribbons, plaques, premium awards and belt buckles.
o Regional Fairs – Counties may participate in three different Regional Fairs: Southern New Mexico State Fair; Eastern New Mexico State Fair; and the Navajo Nation Fair. Indoor exhibits, livestock shows, horse shows and dog shows allow youth to showcase life skills gained throughout the year. Youth receive recognition through ribbons, plaques, and special awards.
o State Fair – 30 counties exhibited items at the 2010 New Mexico State Fair. Extension Agents and Specialists work to provide a quality showcase of members’ completed exhibits. Indoor exhibits, livestock shows, horse shows and dog shows allow youth to showcase life skills gained throughout the year. Youth receive recognition through ribbons, premium money, trophies and livestock auction slots.

Over 5000 items were exhibited at County Fairs and Achievement Days throughout New Mexico in 2010. Over 2100 items submitted by over 780 youth from around the state were exhibited at the 2010 New Mexico State Fair. 525 youth received premium checks ranging from $2 to $192. Youth received recognition and feedback for continued improvement of knowledge and skills related to over 200 project areas. Over $1,000,000 was paid to New Mexico Youth through premiums, junior livestock auctions and fair related scholarships.

Objective #3: During the 4-H program year, 50% of youth enrolled in 4-H will gain public speaking skills, strengthening communication and organization abilities and self-concept, through speaking at club, school enrichment and special interest events.

• Awards and Recognition Events
o County Faculty and Staff work with County Councils and Leaders’ Associations to provide recognition events to the over 5,800 youth involved in the New Mexico 4-H Club Program. More than 20 counties conduct recognition events annually with members serving as keynote speakers, emcees, pledge leaders and presenters. Members receive certificates, metals, plaques, belt buckles, jackets, and other appropriate awards. 4-H members from around New Mexico were recognized for their achievements and increase in life skills throughout the 2009-2010 program year. Members in leadership roles increased public speaking skills.
• Speaking Opportunities
o Local Club Meetings & Programs – 75% of all youth involved in the 4-H program increase public speaking and communication skills through demonstrations and leadership roles in their local club.
o Afterschool Programs – 50% of all youth involved in 4-H Afterschool programs increase public speaking and communication skills trough active involvement in leadership and speaking curricula
o Radio Programs & Other Media – 25% of all youth involved in the 4-H program increase public speaking and communication skills through providing ads for local radio and other media outlets related to County Fairs, National 4-H Week and other 4-H promotions
o County 4-H Council Meetings & Programs – 10% all youth involved in the 4-H program increase public speaking and communication skills through leadership roles at the County level.
• In 2010, 5,895 youth participated in age appropriate activities gaining knowledge and skills related to personal development and leadership.

Accomplishments:
• Local clubs conduct community service projects and participate in projects at the county level. Examples of County Community Service Projects include: Assistance at Civic Events, Christmas Cookies and other gifts for elderly members of the community, Visits and donations to Assisted Living Facilities, Meals on Wheels, Toys for Tots, Highway Clean-up, Relay for Life, Beautification projects, Holiday food baskets, Food Drives, and many other creative community contributions. Over 4,910 youth from 33 counties increased knowledge and skills by participating in community service projects at the local, county, and state level.
o “4-H has taught me a lot and made me a better person. Our club does a lot of community service projects and that makes me feel good to know that I am helping other people in my community.” Hidalgo County 4-H’er.
• In 2010, youth with 1-2 years or more 4-H experience contributed to a statewide community service project during Youth Get Away writing letters of support to children with deployed military parents in partnership with the Operation Military Kids Program.
• Youth at all levels were given the opportunity to apply for Community Service Scholarships thanks to an anonymous donor. Youth must plan and conduct a service project, personally giving primary leadership to the project. Scholarship funds may be used to attend a statewide 4-H event, run for a leadership team position or for an International Exchange. 75 scholarships were awarded in the amount of $12,300.

Over 19,861 youth ages 5-19 participated in special interest programs gaining knowledge and skills related to subject matter, cognitive skills and teamwork skills.

• Special Needs – Programming is being developed to provide specialized programming for youth with special needs by adapting projects for the appropriate skill level. Three counties are currently providing programs pairing diverse special needs youth with caring adults to help them reach their potential as capable, competent, caring and contributing citizens.

• 4-H Military Clubs - Special clubs have established to serve military youth throughout the state. The goals of these clubs are to provide quality 4-H leader education, sustain/increase project and leadership opportunities at the club level, to promote county, district and state level 4-H opportunities to members and to continue community service projects. 2009-2010 membership included 50 4-H members at White Sands Missile Range, 96 4-H members at Holloman Air Force Base, and 50 4-H members at Cannon Air Force Base, for a total of 196 military club members.

• OMK Programming: Operation Military Kids is the U.S. Army's collaborative effort with America's communities to support children and youth impacted by deployment. Regardless of whether Families are experiencing deployment for the first time, the second time or another in a series of multiple deployments, OMK’s goal is to connect military children and youth with local resources in order to achieve a sense of community support and enhance their well-being.
o Speak Out for Military Kids (SOMK): The SOMK “speak out” program is a youth-led, adult supported activity that seeks to give voice to, and educate others about what it is like to be a military kid.
o Mobile Technology Lab (MTL): The MTL contains video/digital cameras, laptops, scanners, printers, etc., and can be signed out by organizations for use with projects, trainings and other events. It is also a way for military kids to send pictures and DVD’s to family members who are deployed. 4-Hers help make photo transfer pillowcase projects and Hug Dolls using these systems. 4-Hers sew pillowcases and donate them to OMK to support this portion of the project.
o Youth Focused Programs: Youth focused programs encompass a variety of different types of OMK events for military kids and their families across New Mexico. These programs provide opportunities for military families to get together, have fun, and offer support to one another in an informal environment.
4-H members assist at these programs across the state, providing support and connecting military youth back to their communities.

o 4-H members have been instrumental in raising money for OMK. Over $1000 dollars has been raised to assist military youth through 4-H service projects: Pillowcase money donations, Forum for Adults Silent Auction, and joint 4-H leadership team fundraisers.
o Hero Packs: Hero Packs are backpacks filled with different items to thank children for the sacrifices their families have made and to help them keep in touch with their deployed love ones. 4-Hers collect items to fill the Hero Packs with. They also assist with writing letters for the packs (over 500 letters written by 4-Hers last year alone) 4-Hers even help distribute the backpacks. 4-Hers have distributed over 500 packs to military youth across our state.

New Mexico 4-H members have been present at five deployment events this year, reaching approximately 500 OMK youth. Indirectly, 4-H members have impacted an infinite number of youth through their donations, time and efforts.

Objective #5: During the 4-H program year, 65% of youth in the 4-H club program will gain
leadership and teamwork skills through leadership opportunities at the club, county and state levels and demonstrate effective leadership and teamwork skills to local community members, organizations and projects, and provide primary leadership to statewide events.

Objective #6: During the 4-H program year, 50% of youth in the 4-H club program will begin establishing partnerships with local administrators and community leaders, effectively managing programs and facilitating change through youth/adult partnerships.

Accomplishments:
• Advisory Committees
o Youth serve on Extension Advisory Committees to assist agents in setting annual program calendars, choosing subject matter topics for workshops and clinics and planning events
o Youth work with adult partners to solicit donations and sponsorships for 4-H programming, scholarships and county fair needs as well conducting fundraisers. Counties conducted a variety of fundraisers to send youth on trips; provide for countywide trainings and socials; and maintain funds for general operations. Fundraisers included: raffles, gift wrapping, turkey shoots, candle sales, auctions, catering, bake sales, car washes, and many others. Counties raised over $19,000 toward providing quality programs. Youth gained knowledge and skills in organizing fundraisers and managing money as well as constructive youth/adult partnerships.

Overall Accomplishment for youth with 1-2 years experience:
• 54,016 youth ages 5-11 gained life skills through participation in the New Mexico 4-H Program.

Objective #7: During the 4-H program year, 85% of Agents and staff will increase professional and personal skills related to life skills and youth development by receiving quality training through theory, contest training, subject matter training, policy training and evaluation training.

Agents received quality training in a variety of subjects, and provided positive feedback regarding overall trainings. Accessibility and timeliness of training has increased through Centra Trainings and New Agent Orientations. Achievement Levels serve to recognize professionals that excel at professional improvement and have been a positive incentive for agents related to attending professional development trainings and serving as resources in teaching.
o In 2010, 11 agents were awarded the Green Level, 14 agents achieved the Bronze Level, 3 gained the Silver Level and 1 was recognized at the Gold Level.

Youth development research emphasizes the importance of meeting the four basic human needs of belonging, generosity, independence and mastery. The Valencia County 4-H Youth Development Program strives to ensure that every youth involved will have the opportunity to participate in 4-H experiences that strengthen a young person’s sense of belonging, generosity, independence and mastery. Through projects and activities in 4-H, youth have many opportunities to develop life and leadership skills that include responsibility, self-confidence, self-esteem, communication skills, teamwork and decision making. These skills are introduced, developed and expanded throughout a lifetime.

During the 4-H program year, youth involved in 4-H programming will learn subject matter and develop life skills through hands-on experiences via project work, competitive events, real-life situations, and career exploration opportunities. Youth will also gain public speaking skills, strengthening communication and organization abilities and self-concept, through speaking at club, school enrichment and special interest events. Finally, youth in the 4-H club program will gain leadership and teamwork skills through leadership opportunities at the club, county and state levels and demonstrate effective leadership and teamwork skills to local community members, organizations and projects, and provide primary leadership to countywide events.

Enrollment:
This year in Valencia County, there was 90 new 4-H members, 165 returning regular members and 41 Cloverbud 4-H members enrolled in the program, resulting in a total enrollment of 296 youth. There was also a total of 115 enrolled adult volunteer leaders to assist in programming.

Newsletter & Communication Efforts:
Newsletter: A bi-monthly newsletter is prepared and sent to approximately 200 4-H members, leaders and supporters in Valencia County. The newsletter is the most effective way of communicating information to 4-H’ers and highlights 4-H’ers and their accomplishments as well as upcoming news and events for 4-H members, leaders and supports to get involved in. Increased awareness about upcoming County, District and State events through the newsletter is indirectly evident by the participation from 4-H’ers in these events.

E-Newsletter: The Agent contributes articles and information about the 4-H program to the bi-monthly Valencia County e-Newsletter. The agent uses this avenue to inform and recruit potential new 4-H’ers and volunteers to the program. This newsletter is distributed to a minimum of 250 Valencia County residents.

Website: A county website is kept up to promote and provide information for the Valencia County 4-H program. The website provides information to 4-H members and their families on events and deadlines as well as information to potential 4-H members on enrolling in the program.

Open House:
An annual Open House was used to promote the county 4-H program, clubs and projects. This year and Ice Cream Social was used to attract attendance to the Open House. 4-H’ers were present to answer questions about the 4-H program to potential 4-H’ers. 35 4-H’ers and volunteers attended this event and approximately 15 new youth were recruited to join the 4-H program.

Competitions:
In order to prepare for 4-H competitions, CES Staff and volunteer leaders plan and conduct practices and workshops which enhance the 4-H’ers knowledge of the contest areas and prepare them for the contests themselves. These practices and workshops are designed for the 4-H’ers to learn not only the subject materials, but to learn friendly competition and decision making life skills. While not all of the practices and workshops are highly attended, those 4-H’ers who do attend express their increase in knowledge after attending. The youth who participate in these practices and workshops demonstrate the increase in their knowledge through their participation and placing in the competitions.

National Contests: Two 4-H’ers traveled to Denver, Colorado to compete at the Western National Roundup in the Impromptu and Consumer Decision Making contests. The Impromptu contestant won first place.

County Contest: This year, 80 4-H’ers enrolled and participated in Valencia County Contests. Decision making and public speaking/communication skills are among the many life skills 4-H’ers develop while participating in these competitive events. These contest help prepare 4-H’ers for future competitions where they compete as teams. County Contest is used as a qualifier for District and State Contests. The volunteer leaders, judges and CES staff who help with these contest strive to build the 4-H’ers self-esteem and self-confidence through positive constructive criticism and advice for future competition. Currently 31% of 4-H’ers enrolled in the county participate in County Contests.

District Contest: This year, 25 4-H’ers participated in the Northern Districts 4-H Contests in Santa Fe, NM. Building on the decision making and public speaking/communication skills 4-H’ers developed while participating in County Contest, 4-H’ers developed essential team work skills while preparing for and participating in these contests. Approximately 10% of 4-H’ers enrolled in the county participated in District Contests.

State 4-H Conference: This year, 11 4-H’ers participated in State 4-H Conference held in Las Cruces, NM. Through contests, workshops and meetings this week long event allows 4-H’ers to increase the development of their team work, public speaking, leadership and decision making life skills. An understanding for 4-H subject matter is evident through the Horse Bowl and Home Ec. Skill-A-Thon teams both taking top honors in their respected competitions. These two teams have earned the right to compete at the national level in January 2011. Three 4-H’ers who attended this event returned with goals of running for a State Leadership Team position. 4% of 4-H’ers enrolled in the county participated in State 4-H Conference.

Record Books:
Two record book trainings were held to give an overview of the new record book guidelines and to emphasize the importance of record keeping and how it will help 4-H’ers in future endeavors like college and career application. 4-H’ers received information on what should be included in record keeping and how to complete a record book. Along with record keeping, 4-H’ers learned the difference between achievement, citizenship and leadership and how they apply to 4-H work. Sixteen 4-H’ers and their parents attended the workshop. Thirty-two 4-H’ers and one Cloverbud completed record books this past year.

Horse Activities:
State 4-H Horse School: 17 4-H’ers from Valencia County applied to attend State 4-H Horse School. Due to extenuating circumstances, the school was cancelled. All 17 4-H’ers all expressed how much they look forward to next year’s school.

Livestock Activities:
State 4-H Livestock School: 24 (15% of youth enrolled in a livestock project) 4-H’ers from Valencia County attend this year’s State 4-H Livestock School. 4-H’ers who attended received hands-on training on how to care for their 4-H livestock animals as well as feeding, veterinary needs, nutrition, selection, and showmanship. 4-H’ers who attended this event were able to take the knowledge gained from the school and help other 4-H’ers with their livestock projects in preparation for the County Expo. Improvement in showmanship by youth who attended livestock was evident at the 2010 Valencia County Community Expo.

Prepare for Fair: Two “Prepare for Fair” livestock project workshops were presented to 4-H youth enrolled in livestock projects or who will be in the future. These workshops provided youth with information on livestock selection, nutrition and feeding, veterinary care, showmanship, and preparing for the various fairs the youth can participate in. Twenty-five youth (16% of youth enrolled in a livestock project) participated in the two workshops presented. 71% of youth surveyed strongly agreed that the information gained was valuable in helping them prepare for fairs this year and in the future. 81% felt the most useful information gained was about livestock bio-security.

Fair Activities:
Tagging Days: Tag days were coordinated and set up by the 4-H Agent and New Mexico Livestock Board and representatives from both the Valencia County Community Expo and the Valencia County Fair. These dates were coordinated for the 4-H and FFA youth of Valencia County. One steer tagging date was set in April and two tag dates were set in May for pigs, goats, lambs and dairy heifers. The Agent was responsible for coordinating dates and locations with the 4-H and FFA members showing livestock. The two representatives on the Junior Livestock Board assisted in the tagging process of the animals.

Valencia County Community Expo: The 2nd Annual Valencia County Community Expo (VCCE) was held in Los Lunas, NM. This event was the venue for 4-H’ers to showcase their 4-H indoor and livestock projects. Sixty-six 4-H’ers (25% enrolled) exhibited 314 indoor projects at the Expo. This was a 73% increase (82 projects) from the previous year. An additional 99 4-H’ers (63% of 4-H’ers enrolled in livestock projects) exhibited their livestock projects at the Expo.

Fall Farm Festival:
The 4th Annual Fall Farm Festival is sponsored by the Valencia County 4-H Program, CES staff and Staff from the NMSU Agriculture Science Center, to promote the agriculture industry. With a pumpkin patch, corn maze, and several agricultural demonstrations, visitors to this event learn about agriculture and the 4-H program. Individual 4-H clubs put on game and activity booths, to promote their clubs, while booths and materials from the Southwest Mobile Dairy, Farm & Livestock Bureau, New Mexico Beef Council, Master Gardeners, New Mexico Game and Fish and Costanza Orchards to promote agriculture. Approximately 1,000 people attended the event, an increase of 66% from the previous year. A total of $4,200 was raised for the 4-H program, a 180% increase from the previous year.

Shooting Sports
Ten Valencia County 4-H’ers (18% of Senior youth enrolled in shooting projects) participated in the State 4-H Shooting Sports contest in Raton, NM. By participating in the different shooting competitions, 4-H’ers further developed their teamwork self-confidence and self-discipline life skills. This event is used as a qualifier for the National Shooting Sports Contest.
