The Valencia County 4-H program hosted the annual Novice Fun Fest in February. The Valencia County 4-H program has ninety-nine novice 4-H members enrolled. Novice members are given the opportunity to develop a broader knowledge base of what the Valencia County 4-H program has to offer. Each club is asked to display a club booth and provide hands-on activities for youth to experience different projects. Novice Fun Fest also provided older 4-H members with leadership opportunities. Older members are asked to help the novice members with their hands-on projects.

The Valencia County 4-H program continues to serve the youth in developing strong leadership skills. In 2006-2007 three officer leadership trainings were held. The trainings were for both the club and the county level officers. Officers gained a better knowledge base on how to use parliamentary procedure, running an effective meeting, and utilizing skills needed to be an effective leader in their clubs and community.

Valencia County Cooperative Extension Service in cooperation with Youth Development Incorporated conducted a communication skills and conflict management course for the Los Lunas alternative to out-of-school suspension program. The program was designed to give schools an alternative to sending students home who have been suspended from school. The program is open to Los Lunas Middle schools and High schools.

An evaluation of the program was done at the end of the year. It was found that children who participated in the program had fewer write-ups than prior to attending the workshops. Students gain a better understanding of stress management skills and conflict resolution skills. These skills give children strategies for dealing with stress and intense situations that arise in interpersonal relationships. The course helped to foster a positive self-worth in the students who attended. It was found that students with a positive sense of self and good communication skills were more likely to succeed in developing healthy relationships with teachers and peers and make more productive choices in life.
