4-H members work hard during the year on projects and the end result is a successful Bi-County Fair. This year the Banquet was held at the Lions Club on January 13, 2007. Several 4-H members received awards for their Record Books that were submitted at the end of November. Forty-two 4-H members and their families attended the Pot Luck/Awards Dinner. Several parents/leaders also received plaques for their services during the year.

McKinley County 4-H Livestock Project Coordination

During the spring and summer months the agent spent 75 to 80 hours making home visits and checking on project animals (other projects besides livestock projects were checked on) and dispersing advice on feeding, facilities, rules, showmanship and evaluation during home visits.

The agent spent numerous hours acting as the advisor to the Bi-County Fair Livestock Committee. The Livestock Committee organized all livestock events at County Fair and the Jr. Livestock Sale. Sixty-three items were sold at the Sale which generated $143,000 for the kids. 89 youth exhibited 195 project animals at County Fair (Beef, Lamb, Goat, Swine, Poultry, and Rabbit).

This year, along with Home Economist, the 4-H agent from McKinley County combine with Southwest Dairy Farmers to coordinate and conduct the 1st annual Kids, Kows, and More Program for all second, third and fourth grade students in the Gallup McKinley County School District. Planning for this event began in the fall of 2006 by meeting with the School Board and sending flyers to all the schools within the county, and by partnering with the McKinley Soil and Water District, New Mexico Cowbelles, New Mexico Beef Council and other volunteers.

The youth involved include students from Gallup and Ramah Schools attending, with presentations on the dairy industry, horses and their care, 4-H, ranching and cattle production, and the 4-H poultry project.

Evaluations remain positive, with many teachers asking for additional hands-on activities. 253 second, third and fourth graders from the Gallup McKinley County schools were educated in the one day program, most according to evaluations leaving with a better understanding of agriculture. The teachers were excited at our first time and have offer to help and spread the word to others.
