COUNTY PORTFOLIO TRAINING
State 4-H created a new record book format which is now called a portfolio. Any books turned into to the State 4-H Office must be in this new format. In order to prevent double work and confusion Sandoval County changed their formatting accordingly.
The 4-H Home Economist and 4-H Agent planned and conducted five portfolio/record book trainings for seventy-seven youth in Sandoval County. The trainings 1) introduced youth to the newly revised format, 2) emphasized the importance of completing a portfolio and 3) highlighted the opportunities and scholarships associated with the portfolios.
As a result of the trainings, one hundred percent of the Sandoval County portfolios turned in at the end of the fiscal year 2009 was in the new format.

“THIS IS 4-H”
A workshop designed to introduce the 4-H program to youth in urban settings.
The 4-H Home Economist and 4-H Agent presented this workshop at four locations in Sandoval County. Ninety-six youth gained an understanding of 4-H and how 4-H can assist them to gain self confidence, skills in personal development, communication and leadership. Youth learned about projects offered, age requirements and club information. Youth participated in hands-on activities related to life skills and learned how the skills are an integral part of 4-H and how they apply to their future.
As a result of these workshops, interest and inquiries about 4-H has increased through phone calls and emails. A new club has also been formed in the Bernalillo area.

Summer passed and many of the 4-H clubs in Sandoval County did not have time, as they usually do, to get their indoor exhibits ready for County Fair.
The 4-H Home Economist held an all day sewing class in Cuba for seven participants. Participants learned basic sewing machine parts and sewing skills such as cutting, pining, ironing, and hemming. With the new skills learned participants made a simple skirt with an elastic waist band.
As a result of the class five skirts were displayed at County Fair, one of which went on to State Fair.

As a result of the class twelve jars of strawberry jam were displayed at County Fair, two of which went on to State Fair. The class had great reviews and there are plans to have another in early spring to can beans.

County Extension personnel in cooperation with Master Gardener volunteers and the classroom teachers provided a quality educational experience. Students gained knowledge related to science and learned life skills related to critical thinking, problem solving and organization. Students gained valuable communication skills through the poster presentations and interaction with staff and volunteers. One hundred percent of youth participants were Native American.
