COUNTY CAMP

The Sandoval County 4-H Council hosted a 3 day 4-H Camp at the Sandoval County Fairgrounds. Thirteen 4-H leaders/adults and 49 youth, of which 41% were Native American, participated in hands-on workshops and activities designed to increase life skills related to decision making, teamwork, cooperation and self-esteem. Senior 4-H members served as counselors completing their leadership training and experience. 90% of youth participants reported an increase in mastery related to entomology, horticulture, shooting sports (archery), livestock evaluation and showmanship, nutrition education and food safety. Observations of positive behavior changes were evident in youth participants. Parents and leaders noted they felt the camp had made a positive impact on the youth. Participants and adults requested that the camp be extended to 5 days. One parent stated, “Joining 4-H was the best thing that has happened for my 3 kids.”

SPECIAL INTEREST/SCHOOL ENRICHMENT

IN-SCHOOL CLUB

4-H Home Economist in collaboration with Bernalillo High School enrolled 13 special needs students into a 4-H club, “Bernalillo Warriors.” Through monthly presentations and hands-on workshops students gained knowledge in bee keeping, agriculture, nutrition, food safety & sanitation. 100% of youth gained skills relating to self-worth, belonging and camaraderie. 22 creatively designed hands-on projects from the club were displayed at County Fair. 4 were displayed at State Fair.

COMMERCIAL USES OF THE RIVER “AGRICULTURE”

RiverXChange is an outreach program that integrates water resource topics with computer technology, hands-on curriculum and classroom partnerships. Goal is to strengthen 4th grade students’ and teachers’ understanding and appreciation for the local river ecosystem and to protect water resources. 4-H Home Economist presented commercial uses of water: “Agriculture” a hands-on educational program related to farm irrigation systems and conservation technology. 176 students from 7 Rio Rancho schools participated. Students gained knowledge about their local river, watershed and water resource issues and posted what they learned on a wiki website. Each class was partnered with a 4th grade class in another US state.

ROLLING RIVER

How does a river work? Students observe a model river and watch the effects of water as it flows down stream. 4-H Home Economist presented an interactive hands-on workshop to teach water conservation, protection of our water resources and riparian ecology utilizing the Rolling Rivers demonstration trailer. Use of the rolling river trailer is a collaborative effort with the Soil & Water Conservation District. 51 Native American students participated and learned life skills related to critical thinking, problem solving and wise use of resources.

“THIS IS 4-H”

4-H Home Economist presented this workshop at 3 locations in Sandoval County. The workshop was designed to introduce the 4-H program to youth in urban settings and on the Navajo reservation. 160 youth gained an understanding of 4-H and how 4-H can assist them to gain self confidence, skills in personal development, communication and leadership. Youth learned about the 4-H pledge, projects offered, age requirements and club information. Youth participated in hands-on activities related to life skills and how these skills are an integral part of 4-H and their future. As a result of these workshops, interest and inquiries about 4-H has increased. Enrollment increased in the Rio Rancho/ Corrales area and on the Navajo Reservation by 43% and 12%, respectively.

RODEO 1ST AID TRAINING

29 youth enrolled in the rodeo and/or horse project attended a Rodeo First Aid Workshop in San Ysidro. Participants gained knowledge in animal and human safety, proper usage of equipment/tack, protective gear, and basic first aid. Youth participating in the training increased knowledge and skills related to critical thinking, positive sportsmanship, self-motivation and goal setting.

DAIRY GOAT FARM TOUR

4-H Home Economist collaborated with local dairy goat producer where 7 youth gained knowledge as it relates to the dairy goat project. Youth learned husbandry, nutrition, milking, food handling and safety, and entrepreneurship opportunities. Youth gained life skills such as: responsibility, caring, communication, healthy choices and importance of community.

4-H SEWING CLASS

The 4-H Home Economist held a sewing class in San Ysidro for 7 participants. Participants learned basic sewing machine parts and sewing skills such as cutting, pining, ironing, and hemming. With the new skills learned participants made a tote bag. As a result of the class 5 skirts were displayed at County Fair, one of which went on to State Fair.

4-H CANNING CLASS

The 4-H Home Economist held a canning class, for 25 participants, at the Canning Center. By making salsa participants learned basic canning skills such as sanitation, how much head space to leave, and the importance of taking out air bubbles. As a result of the class 12 jars of salsa were displayed at County Fair, 2 of which went on to State Fair.

COMPETITIVE EVENTS

County competitive events and contest trainings were conducted to expand life skills and knowledge. 22 youth participated in County Contest. 22.7% of novice and junior youth advanced to District level competition and 22.7% of senior youth advanced to state level competition. Contest areas included consumer decision, livestock judging, horse judging, wildlife ID, horticulture and public speaking. 85% of youth participating in competitive events increased mastery and independence related to teamwork, character and critical thinking as evidenced by team camaraderie, positive sportsmanship and completion of project related activities.

COMMUNITY SERVICE

Of the 180 youth enrolled in the 4-H program 55% conduct community service projects and 35% of 4-H youth participate in service projects at the county level. Examples of county community service projects include: highway trash clean ups, washing windows at local businesses, cleanup and repairs at fairgrounds, assist elderly with yard work, clothes and blanket donations, food drives and many other creative community contributions. Youth increase knowledge and skills related to generosity and service learning, contributions to group efforts and responsible citizenship as evidenced by willingness to serve, appreciation of service opportunities and youth assuming leadership roles related to service. Results were reported by club leaders and in member 4-H record books.

YOUTH LEADERSHIP/CITIZENSHIP DEVELOPMENT

Sandoval County youth are afforded many opportunities to learn and develop life skills related to leadership and citizenship. 4-H Agent, 4-H Home Economist and Club leaders encourage youth participation within their clubs, county council and state leadership teams. These opportunities provide youth with a strong sense and understanding of responsibility, self-esteem, belonging and generosity.

4-H COUNCIL- This year’s team consisted of 7 officers from 4 different clubs. Several leaders worked with the team to understand their role as officers and to plan their calendar of events for the upcoming year.

4-H AWARDS BANQUET- Seven 4-H youth served as keynote speakers, emcees, pledge leaders and presenters, increasing their public speaking skills and giving leadership to the overall program. Members received pins, medals and plaques in recognition of their achievements and increase in life skills related to mastery, belonging, generosity and independence throughout the program year. 108 members, leaders and guests attended the event. The growth and development of the 4-H youth is evident through their abilities to complete a record book, set and obtain goals and the leadership skills they exhibit as they host this event.

PARLI PRO TRAINING- Local parliamentarian hosted a training for all 4-H Council Officers as well as for other 4-H Club Officers. 14 4-H members participated in this training. Youth increased knowledge related to preparing agendas, order, motions and leadership through basic life skills as evidenced by effective club meetings. Youth increased mastery skills such as planning and organizing, critical thinking, problem solving and communication.

SENIOR LEADERSHIP RETREAT- 4 4-H senior age members participated in the State event. One member was selected to serve as a State 4-H Ambassador. This is Sandoval County's second youth to serve on a state leadership team.

TOUR OF THE STATE CAPITAL – 18 4-H youth members rode the RailRunner to Santa Fe to tour the Governor’s Mansion, Santa Fe Capital, and met the Governor and State Engineer of NM during the legislature. Youth gained knowledge of local government, citizenship, and leadership skills. One grandparent stated, “This should be an annual event. This is not something kids get to do within their school. My granddughter learned so much.”

STARBUCK’S SPRING HORSE SHOW - An annual event organized and led by the Starbuck’s 4-H Club (Southern Sandoval County). Youth are able to compete and practice for district and state shows, etc. Youth gain knowledge and skills related to critical thinking, positive sportsmanship, self-motivation and goal setting.

CUBA GYMKHANA- An annual event organized and led by the Cuba Coyotes 4-H Club (Northern Sandoval County). Youth are able to compete and practice for district and state shows, etc. Youth gain knowledge and skills related to critical thinking, positive sportsmanship, self-motivation and goal setting.

STALLION BARREL RACING SERIES - An annual event organized and led by the Jemez Mountain Stalions 4-H Club (Central Sandoval County). Youth are able to compete and practice for rodeo events . Youth gain knowledge and skills related to critical thinking, positive sportsmanship, self-motivation and goal setting.
