Range Management for New Mexico (Sierra County)

Range monitoring and plant identification is important in managing forage for cattle in Sierra County. In recent years infestations of annual plants and noxious weeds have made negative impacts on rangeland and reduced productive area by as much as 15%. Ranchers that have a better understanding of forage consumption, plant types, nutrient values, and negative attitudes of plants can better manage rangeland pastures for optimal production and safety of beef cattle. To assist with improved management four noxious weed / range plant workshops were offered to the stakeholders of Sierra County. Participants gained an understanding of the importance of plant identification, noxious weeds, and rangeland monitoring. Rangeland treatment and controls were discussed to assist in reducing undesirable plant production. Stakeholders have became more aware of desirable and undesirable plants and increases their knowledge by 53% according the pre-test and post-test results. Participants stated that they will utilize this knowledge to improve their management plans and now understand the impact that noxious weeds have on rangeland production.
