Impact Report | 4-H Youth Leadership Development The Lincoln County 4-H program has approximately 161 youth and 31 adults enrolled in the traditional 4-H program which provides opportunities for the members to gain knowledge and skills in personal development, leadership, and various project areas. Competitive Events The Home Economist along with the Ag Agent organized and conducted the Lincoln County 4-H Contests. The Home Economist was in charge of Clothing Revue, Home Ec Skill-a-thon, Poetry, Presentation, Consumer Decision Making and Favorite Foods. Twenty-six 4-H members from Lincoln County participated in County Contests. Twenty-two 4-H members from Lincoln County advanced to District Contests. Contests encourage 4-H youth to expand life skills and gain knowledge in the areas of public speaking, sewing, basic money management, nutrition and housing. Nine senior members attended State 4-H Conference and participated in numerous judging events and workshops. Lincoln County has one Officer serving on the 2010-2011 State Leadership Team and one serving as an Ambassador. Lincoln County Fair Forty-five 4-H members participated in the Lincoln County Fair in the indoor area with 289 items exhibited. A total of 107 indoor 4-H exhibits were entered in the New Mexico State Fair. Recognition for indoor exhibits included ribbons, rosettes, belt buckles and jackets. 4-H youth showed an increase of knowledge and skills related to creative arts, animal science, baking, woodworking, engineering, personal development and other exhibits. Awards & Recognition During the annual County 4-H Awards Banquet the County Council leadership team served as speakers, pledge leaders, and presented the awards, which increased their public speaking and leadership skills. Members received completion pins and plaques in recognition of their achievements and increase in life skills during the 2010-1011 program year. 84 members, leaders and guests attended the event. Sponsorships & Fundraising The County conducted a variety of fundraisers to send chaperones on 4-H sponsored trips, purchase awards, provide insurance for all 4-H members, pay for leader background checks and provide scholarships for 4-H members. Fundraisers included: Cowboy Symposium events; catering Buyers Dinner during the county fair. 4-H members raised over $3500 toward providing quality programs. Youth gained knowledge and skills in organizing fundraisers and managing money as well as positive youth/adult partnerships. School Enrichment In 2010, Lincoln County Extension Service hosted Kids, Kows & More event during the Lincoln County Cowboy Symposium. This educational hands-on learning experience taught youth and adults about the agriculture industry. The event is designed to give urban youth a better understanding of agriculture in their community. The school age youth involved were students from Ruidoso, Hondo, and Carrizozo School District. Volunteer leaders presented topics on dairy production, cattle ranching, open fire dutch oven cooking, and sheep industry. 662 youth and teachers attended the event. Evaluations stated that the students and teachers gained a better understanding of agriculture and their environment. Legislative Days Ten 4-H members and three adult leaders attended Legislative Days in Santa Fe. The members met with Lincoln County representatives and hand delivered cookies and an informational brochure about Lincoln County 4-H programs. Members gained knowledge in the area of leadership and citizenship. |
