Impact Report Amy Star Produced a tri-fold flyer for the promotion and marketing of the Grant Count 4-H Program. This brochure was distributed at various promotional events and given out to all children in the 3rd, 4th and 5th grades in the Silver Consolidate School District. Grant County 4-H Collaborated with the Silver FFA chapter, to put together a promotional booth at the 4th of July park activities. Set up the 4-H Shooting Sports trailer and handed out Join Grant County 4-H brochures. Attendance at the booth and shooting sports trailer was estimated to be over 400. Amy Star attended numerous 4-H Club meetings to develop positive relationship and open avenues of communications. Amy met with 7 clubs, with a total attendance of 170 youth and 23 leaders. Discussed priorities with Leaders and observed club in operation. Amy attended 2 club fundraisers and assisted with the events. Amy asked the local paper to cover one of these, resulting in a photo and article In the paper Amy Star met with the 4-H Council four times during the year, assisting with agenda planning, use of parliamentary procedure and leadership development. Developed an itemized budget and helped the Council stay within their budget. Assisted 4-H Council with fundraising efforts, County Fair activities, and plan for Officer Elections in the fall. Amy collaborated with Donna Comyford to develop a horsemanship clinic series on the 3 Sunday of the month from February through July. These clinics were advertised to neighboring counties, and we had several participants from neighboring counties. From 2 – 8 youth participated in the clinic each month in learning about horsemanship, showmanship, trail obstacles and riding patterns. Several youth gained the skills and confidence to go to several shows over the summer. Adults were encouraged to ride and learn with the youth. Amy coordinated the achievement day and judging for indoor 4-H projects. Ten 4-H members entered projects . Eight 4-H members participated in the interview judging where they gained public speaking skills and were able to express satisfaction in project completion. Grant County sent 54 projects to the State Fair. Amy Star attended several of the County Fairboard meetings and served on the Jr Livestock Committee and as the superintendent for the goat show. Assisted with the fair entries, clean up day and the fair show activities. 93 youth participated in the market livestock. 41 youth parcticipated with indoor exhibits, and 15 youth participated with breeding livestock, poultry and rabbits. Amy Star assisted with the County Shooting Sports program. The first event of the years was a shooting sports safety meeting, with 16 youth and 5 leaders attending. The certified Shooting Sports leaders held weekly practices at the Grant County Public Shooting range. The 4-H Shooting Sports leaders offered 4 Hunters Safety classes in cooperation with the Extension Office open to both 4-H members and the public. This community service is very much appreciated by participants. Four Grant County teams attended the state shooting sports contest with very good placings: Archery won 1st, Air Rifle 2nd, Shotgun 4th and 9th. Amy Star chaperoned 23 youth to participate in 12 teams at the State 4-H Contest. 10 of the teams placed in the top 5. 5 of the teams won the State Contest. All 23 youth that attended the conference were recipients of awards. State Champions in Wildlife, Crops, Wool, Consumer Decisions and Parliamentary Procedure. Youth gained public speaking skills, interpersonal skills, critical thinking ability and self confidence. Amy Star coordinated practices with State Specialist Doug Cram for the WHEP team to prepare for competing at the National WHEP Contest. Chaperoned the 2009 Wildlife Habitat Evaluation Team to the National WHEP contest in Los Alamos, NM. The Grant County Team placed 9th Amy Star hosted county contests for achery, 22 rifle, speech, Welcome to NM 4H, Consumer Decisions, Wildlife, Livestock, Horse, fashion revue, and crops. Amy utilized the assistance of numerous leaders and resource people to put on these contests. Held awards and social at city pool for the 55 youth that participated in the contest. Amy Star and Saundra Offut taught the Embryology Program to 12 classes in several elementary schools. 180 youth in kindergarten, 2nd and 3rd grade participated in the program. Students learned about eggs and the reproductive development of chicks. Amy Star coached the 4-H/FFA Horse Judging Team. Teaching critical thinking skills and verbal communication skills. 16 practices were held in the spring with an average of 7 youth participating. Attended the Back Country Horsemen’s Assoc. meeting. Gave a presentation on horse pasture and preventative health care. Included a breed specific riding demonstration and gave out Extension Resource Contact information Amy gave a presentation at the Glenwood Ranch Days in April, 300 youth participated and learned about the traditions of ranching and importance of natural resources and agriculture. Amy Star attended the NMSF to provide leadership and support to the 4-H members from Grant County that were participating. 41 4-H members competed with animal projects. 8 4-H members sold animals in the sale. Amy Star was a presenter at the Western Regional Leaders Forum in Albuquerque in March 2010. She gave a 6 hour presentation on the Working Ranch Horse program. The 22 attendees represented 11 different states. Evaluations of the program indicated a significant gain in technical knowledge and skills as well as a desire to apply the knowledge gained to a home program.
