Impact Report | Record Book Completion--The agent held a number of Record Book compilation workshops, working with 10 members, independently and in groups. (5 boys and 5 girls, 2 hispanic, 8 anglo). A total of 21 record books were completed which total 48% of traditionally enrolled membership (There are currently 53 members enrolled for the 2009 4-H year, with 5 of these being cloverbuds). This is up 20% from last year record book completions. Youth Leadership and Adult Volunteerism Southeast District Contests--The agent met with both the local 4-H leader SE District Planning group and the De Baca 4-H Council 1-2 times each local 4-H programming and district 4-H contests. The District planning group met at least once a month, Jan.- July to plan the upcoming 4-H District contests that will take place in June, 2010 in De Baca County. Leaders, volunteers and members focused on fund raising efforts to pay for the event as well facility and contest logistics. A notebook was prepared by the agent to help keep the event organized for the local leaders and members as well as for the host County in 2011. A total of 15 leaders, parents and members participated in the monthly planning sessions. Over 400 4-H members, 9-13, their parents, Agents, Volunteer leaders, Key resource individuals and businesses participated in the annual SE District Contests hosted in De Baca County in June. Youth participated in a variety of contest subject matter areas as well as leadership training and social activities. The De Baca County 4-H Council Officers led the event, under the Agent and other key leader’s supervision. The contests lasted two days with awards and recognition taking place each afternoon. Youth participated in Shooting Sports, Livestock and Horse Judging, Public Speaking, specific subject matter bowl contests, Meats ID, Wildlife ID, subject matter Skill-a-thons, Sewing and Fashion Review, just to name a few. All in all, nine counties participated. Judging Practices and contests The agent worked consistently with 25% of the youth signed up in 4-H in weekly judging practices throughout the spring. County contests were also planned and organized for the beginning of June. These contests will be spread out over a period of the first two weeks of June as County leaders and parents assist the Extension Service in planning for District 4-H contests. Thirty4-H members participated in County, District and State Contests overall (members 9-19). This is over half of the youth signed up for traditional 4-H programming in De Baca County. Youth from De Baca County competed in the following contests: Sewing and Fashion Review, Rifle, Archery, Livestock, Horse, Horse Bowl, Entomology, Crops, Wildlife, Poetry and Public Speaking. Youth Leadership Activities The Agent worked with the local 4-H County Council to host a regular monthly planning meeting. Each month throughout the year, a quorum met and decided on county 4-H programming including leadership activities, 4-H promotion and recruitment, 4-H citizenship and achievment activities. Four youth attended Senior Leadership retreat in Alb; Eight youth attended Youth Get-away at Camp Inlow. All the Council officers were involved with the planning and implementing of the SE District Contests and preparing the group activities and awards presentations. This was really good leadership experience, especially for the younger council members as they are the future council leadership. In addition, two De Baca County senior members and one county leader attended Citizenship Washington Focus in Washington DC during the summer, gaining valuable leadership and citizenship knowledge. These two senior members will present their trip and activities to the local 4-H council, clubs and schools during the winter of 2010. |
