Impact Report Impact Report 2010 Youth Development Short term objectives: For this reporting period the agent needed to reestablish the 4-H program. Hired to assist this agent is a paraprofessional 4-H coordinator that is employed by the Jicarilla Apache Nation. The agent had two of these individuals vacate there position in the last year. The agent currently has a third individual serving as 4-H coordinator. The agent has provided training for these individuals and has promoted 4-H around the tribal community. The agent has also assisted with promotion of 4-H off of the reservation and has assisted with various other tribal youth groups. On the reservation there are now two 4-H clubs. The agent works with both of these clubs but has primarily been involved with the Sweetwater 4-H club. The agent also works with the agricultural 4-H summer enrichment program. The sweet water club had 7 enrolled members and 3 adult leaders this past 4-H year. The agricultural 4-H summer program had 20 youth participate and 4 leaders. The agent has assisted youth participating projects such as, this is 4-H, leather craft, baking and pet projects. The agent also worked with the Silver Spur 4-H club off the reservation. This club had 7 members and 6 leaders. The agent worked with youth in a classroom garden project with 11 youth participating. The youth in this program learned about growing seasons, the needs of the plants and basic soil and water requirements for healthy plants. The class grew various types of vegetables and enjoyed this program. The teacher of this class is planning on continuing it for another year and the students would like to look at other plants, such as flowers that they might grow this coming growing season.
