Impact Report | Kitchen Creation; Bernalillo County has the largest of population in New Mexico or greater than 1/3 of the states population. Type two diabetes is a huge medical problem in Bernalillo County and there is a need for research based educational programs for adults who deal with type two diabetes. Kitchen Creation is 4 part cooking school for diabetics and their families which is an ACES program funded by NM Department of Health. There is a large demand in this county for this program and between October 2009 and May 2010 nine Kitchen Creation classes were conducted in Albuquerque. The two Home Economists in Bernalillo County both helped with the Kitchen Creation program reaching over 180 people. The request came though the participants of the Kitchen Creation program for more so a monthly diabetes support group began and an additional class Kitchen Creation 2 class was created. Of all the programs the Home Economist does though out the year Kitchen Creation reaches more people and has the biggest impact for positive behavior changes than any other program. The evaluations are available upon request and NMSU ACES does collected data on Kitchen Creations classes throughout the state. Every year more health professionals in the diabetes field refer more patients to the NMSU Kitchen Creation program. A registered dietitian co-teaches Kitchen Creation with the Home Economist the two diabetes educators helping with the classes are from UNM. On many levels the Home Economist who run Kitchen Creation collaborates with state agencies, local medical personnel and the University of New Mexico. |
