Impact Report A leader approached agent with the opportunity to apply for a NRA grant to purchase portable traps for our shotgun program. Turn around time was very short, so a grant was written to provide shells and the traps. The NRA awarded the program $4500.00. After shopping around, was able to purchase one trap, with battery, wobbler kit, and a moving cart along with shells and some pigeons for the program. As part of our grant application a recruiting effort was conducted in the form of a shooting sports fun day. Over 50 4-Hers and parents attended as 4-Hers tried 22 rifle, shot gun and archery. 4-Hers learned the safety rules and most were able to try something new. Guns and ammunition and bows and arrows were provided as well as lunch. This event was the kick-off to our shooting sports practices. Because of the grant, 4-Hers were able to shoot shotgun and rifle for free this year. All ammunition was provided, however it was a challenge since there was Nationwide Shortage and our bargain federal ammunition order was backordered. Many of these 4-Hers would not have been able to attend many practices due to the increase in the cost of ammunition. To help the archery kids, contacts were made to arrow companies for discounted arrows. During practices 4-Hers learned skills to improve their aim, patience, and concentration. They learn safety rules and how to properly handle and use the weapons. Approximately 12 practices were held from March to June in each discipline. Rifle had 20 youth enrolled with 12 being 1st year rifle kids, Pistol had 2 youth enrolled with 1 completing, Shotgun had 13 youth enrolled with 6 1st year shotgun kids, Archery had 23 enrolled with 5 1st year archery kids. We had 8 seniors compete at state which was the first time we have taken teams since the shoot was moved to May. Agent along with volunteers helped coordinated a Friends of the NRA Banquet and worked with 4-Hers to help with the serving of the meal and beverages during the event. The 4-Hers cleared tables and helped wash dishes as well. The 4-Hers were able to polish their communication skills as they visited with people at the tables they were serving about their shooting sports projects. To help purchase a trailer to haul the new trap in, the Shooting Sports 4-Hers and Leaders held a 3-D Archery Shoot. Agent wrote funding requests to civic organizations and a grant application to Lodger’s Tax to help purchase 3-D targets. Agent prepared 4-Hers to make presentations at civic groups and on the radio about the event. Flyers were created and advertising was developed for the event. Over 20 4-Hers and parent s helped with setting up, running the event, preparing and serving meal, the concession, and cleaning up the event. Twenty-five 4-Hers, leaders and parents helped with cleaning and mowing of 5-mile park the week before and hauling and setting up the day before the event. Weather did not cooperate well, but the we did have over 30 shooter participated and raised about $600.00. Agent completed reports and thank yous to the groups involved. 4-Hers involved learned a multitude of skills ranging from safe cooking and serving outdoors to counting money, from sales to which weeds to avoid, from where to look for snakes to how to slow down and aim carefully, so won’t have to hunt for arrows.
