Impact Report Nutrition education is a need of all residents of Eddy County- youth and adults. The ICAN program has been established and has grown its clientele base each year it has been in the county. The Home Economist supervises one Nutrition Educator in the county. Nutrition education has been offered in various venues throughout the county including local head- start programs, parent-teacher organizations, battered women’s shelters, senior citizen centers, the income support office, elementary schools in all communities in the county, farmers markets, health fairs, and even some private businesses. Youth and adults are taught about basic food choices, spending food dollars wisely, food safety, age appropriate nutrition, and some food preparation tips. The Home Economist and Nutrition Educator attended regional meetings for the program in Las Cruces and learned on curriculum and program updates, new teaching activities and tools, and had many opportunities to network with other counties with an active ICAN program. It is a future goal to hire a second Educator for this program in order to serve more clientele.
