Impact Report For the 2008- 2009 program year the Valencia County Cooperative Extension Service has one hundred and ten new members to the 4-H program. The Valencia County Home Economist conducted a series of Welcome to New Mexico 4-H workshops. The workshops targeted new members of the program to help them to become familiar with Valencia County 4-H. Members who completed the workshops left with an understanding of the history of 4-H, how the program is run, educational opportunities, personal growth and development opportunities, leadership skills, positive relationships with other new members from around the county, and a positive relationship with 4-H advisors. Along with the basic skills needed to be successful in 4-H, members had the opportunity to work on and finish projects that they could exhibit at the Valencia County Expo and the State Fair. This workshop reached approximately 40% of the new members. By providing these workshops for new members we have the opportunity to better retain new members who start with the 4-H program. Many times new members feel overwhelmed, and feel as though they do not have the support that they need. These workshops will help them to feel more comfortable and competent when attending club, county, and state events. The Valencia County Diplomats had the opportunity to work directly with the new members who participated in the Welcome to New Mexico 4-H workshops. The Diplomats were able to put their leadership and citizenship skills to work and work to refine other important life skills such as communication and problem solving skills.
