Impact Report Fit Family Program began planning in the late fall of 2008 and the class actually began in January of 09. The effort was coordinated with APS nutrition educators, UNM nursing and diabetes education, City of Albuquerque Community Center, 4H and Extension Home Economist. Much detail planning took place before the program began. Meeting at West Mesa Community Center 11 families began the 8 week program and 9 families completed program. Families met every Tuesday evening from 5:30 to 8pm. A meal was served to the families and program on fitness, nutrition and healthy eating were shared every week. This program was loosely designed using the Fit Family Program at NMSU which is a grant funded program. The Home Economist presented lessons to the parents on nutrition, portion control and feeding you family healthy on a budget and worked with the children in meal preparation for the family meal. Weekly program schedule is on file with Home Economist. Planning is underway for a late fall Fit Family class to begin in the NE Heights of Albuquerque.
