Impact Report County Competitive events and contest trainings were conducted to expand life skills and knowledge. Novice/junior and senior youth advanced to District/State Contests. Contest areas included livestock evaluation, entomology, crops, presentations, wildlife, range plant identification, and shooting sports. 100% of youth participating in competitive events increased knowledge and skills in the four basic need areas relating to Mastery, Independence, and Belonging through cooperation, self esteem, critical thinking, teamwork and contributing to a group effort. Coordinated with Grant County to set up this year’s District Contests, 173 youth participated in horse, livestock, wildlife, range, crops, rifle, archery, presentations, favorite foods, and clothing. District contest encompassed the life skills that 4-H has to offer. Livestock is a large part of Catron County 4-H program. This agent began project checks in May continuing until state fair in September. Tag days were set up and retinal scans were collected. Catron County had 1 steer, 4 lambs, 3 goats, 5 swine, and 6 rabbits go to state fair this year. Youth worked with adults to raise funds to send youth on trips, provide for countywide trainings and socials, and to maintain funds for general operations. Fundraisers included an enchilada dinner and concession stand held during county fair. County fair is where we make most of your money and this year we did especially well with taking over the concession stand during the Junior Rodeo as well as the Night Rodeo. Catron County made around $1400 this year during fundraising at fair. Youth gained knowledge and skills in organizing the fundraisers and managing money as well as constructive youth/adult partnerships. Youth also learned how to conduct themselves in high stress situations.
