4-H and Youth Development Specialist Areas
This program area includes research, teaching, and Extension outreach dealing with youth development, both in 4-H and classroom settings.

- Curriculum Development
- Scholarly work in this subject area includes development of high-quality experiential and contextually-based agricultural, natural resource, and human capital development curricula that prepare youth for careers, higher education, and life while improving learning in mathematics, science, social studies, and language arts/reading.
- Diversity and Special Populations
- Research and scholarly activity in this subject area will determine factors enhancing or threatening the inclusion and/or success of diverse and special needs youth in agricultural and Extension education programs.
- Leadership Development
- Research and scholarly work in this subject area focuses on determining and diffusing best practices for developing effective and reflective agricultural and natural resource adult and youth leaders.
- Program Development
- Research and scholarly activity in this subject area focuses on determining and diffusing best practices for local agricultural and Extension education programs to ensure student (academic, career, and life) success.
- Teacher Development
- Research and scholarly work in this subject area focuses on determining and diffusing best practices for developing agricultural and Extension education educators who are effective in fostering student (academic, career, and life) success.
- Youth Development
- Work in this area includes programs and activities that promote positive youth development, including 4-H. These activities extend knowledge to youth and convey a sense of belonging, teach life skills, and provide opportunities for mastery, competence, and independence. This work also includes a focus on the social and emotional development of program participants.
